An annual survey conducted by the Pew Research Center and released earlier this month has uncovered a drastic shift in how Republicans view higher education. More than half now believe that colleges have a negative impact on the "way things are going" in America.
Within two years this statistic has flip-flopped. In 2015, the survey found that 54 percent of Republicans felt colleges had a positive impact on the country’s direction, while 37 percent rated higher education negatively.

But the latest version, conducted last month, found that 58 percent of Republicans now feel colleges have a negative effect, with 36 percent believing that higher education has a positive effect.
This is in high contrast to the Democrats that were surveyed: 72 percent of Democrats feel higher education has a positive effect, with only 19 percent seeing college as a negative cultural institution.
