During her sentencing, Judge David Stockdale QC said that he accepted that Newland suffered from “significant psychiatric and psychological disorders” and that these findings mitigated her crimes. He also said that while the chance of Newland reoffending was “very low”, her mental health problems “did not give you licence to fabricate and mislead as you did”.

Newland was originally sentenced to eight years imprisonment in November of 2015 for the same sexual offences but that conviction was overturned on the grounds that the trial was not fair and balanced.
To keep this scenario from replaying in the retrial, it was kept from the jury and the media that Newland had plead guilty to defrauding her employer shortly before court proceedings commenced in the sexual assault case.
