In an extreme case of catfishing gone wrong, Gayle Newland, a 27-year-old from Cheshire, England, has been re-sentenced to six years in jail for three concurrent counts of sexual assault after a failed retrial.
Newland, who had earned a degree in creative writing and was described in court as “an imaginative and persuasive liar”, created a phony online male identity she named 'Kye Fortune' to mislead and seduce a fellow female student of the University of Chester in 2011.
She convinced her victim to wear a blindfold during the time they spent together, something that some would argue should have been a huge red flag for the assaulted party.

Not only did Newland convince her classmate to wear the blindfold during intercourse, in which she donned a strap-on prosthetic penis, but during all of their physical encounters, including what amounted to at least 100 hours of hanging out, going for drives, sunbathing, and 'watching' movies together.
The victim insists that she had no idea she was actually having sex with Newland, or a female for that matter, and would not have consented had she known.
