I've always found it unnerving that my local hospital sits next to a graveyard. As a child I was convinced that it was a matter of convenience. Someone dies, they just wheel 'em out and bury them. I was also sure no one got out alive given the rather large size of the cemetery. So I can't imagine how patients at the University of Mississippi Medical Center feel.
Officials have known for some time that there are bodies buried on the grounds, they just weren't sure how many. But after bringing in sonar surveying teams, they've found it's worse than they originally thought with nearly 7,000 bodies in need of exhumation.
The hospital's location was once the Mississippi Asylum for the Insane, which operated between 1855 and 1935, and the dead buried beneath the medical center were once patients.
