A Nevada woman is facing criminal charges after falsely claiming that her 10-year-old son had leukemia and eventually died. Her take-home on the scam? A little over two thousand dollars.
According to Carson City Sheriff, Ken Furlong, the 31-year-old mother, Victoria Morrison, was arrested in a Nevada motel last Friday. Her son, and her three other children, were placed in the custody of state protective services.
Not only did Victoria use a GoFundMe site to collect donations, but she also took advantage of local charitable programs. The allegedly dying 10-year-old was included in a shopping spree with emergency responders during a "Shop with a Hero" event held in Carson City, Nevada, and was also given a Charity Helicopter Ride, according to CBS affiliate KTVN-TV.
Authorities say that Victoria used social media to announce the death and cremation of her son, also claiming that a memorial service was held to honor his memory.
But their property manager spotted the boy and alerted the police. The deputy sent to investigate spoke to the boy, who told him that his mother and her boyfriend were planning on taking him on a hunting trip over the weekend.
